It was a beautiful and sunny day on the Somerset Levels for Katie and Steve’s wedding at the Almonry Barn in Muchelney. Katie and Steve struck us as one of the most intelligent and witty couples we’ve ever photographed and it was a pleasure to share their wedding day in their company.
The day was auspicious as it also marked 39 years to the day since Katie’s own parents got married. This happy accident wasn’t planned, but was certainly ample cause for double celebrations all round.
Katie radiated happiness and confidence in a beautifully understated and stylish vintage dress from Elizabeth Avey. Katie and Steve are clearly a modern, progressive couple and very much an equal partnership, so we thought it was great that Katie broke with tradition and gave a speech at the reception. Wedding speeches are so often an all-male affair and personally we would love to see more brides speak as she did – with grace, confidence, poise, humour and eloquence.
Steve is an accomplished climber and Katie’s mum has a long-running tradition of baking cakes for Katie and Steve to celebrate important occasions, so she created a masterpiece for their wedding: a cake featuring a mini Steve climbing up to the cake’s summit with Katie waiting on top!
The Almonry Barn has a fascinating history. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument – an accolade it shares with Stonehenge – and has been standing for over 800 years. It’s said to be the oldest surviving wedding barn in the whole of England, though sympathetic renovation and decoration have brought it into the 21st century whilst retaining its rustic charm!
